About the role
A Customer Success Manager (CSM) makes sure customers get real value from a product after they buy it, so they stay, renew and grow. CSMs are most common in SaaS and subscription businesses, where revenue depends on customers renewing every month or year. The CSM is the long-term owner of the relationship, working between the customer, sales, support and product teams.
A typical day includes onboarding calls with new customers, checking account health dashboards, following up on accounts where usage is falling, preparing business reviews for key stakeholders, and planning renewals months before they are due. CSMs also spot expansion opportunities, such as more seats or a higher plan, and pass qualified leads to account managers or close them directly, depending on the company.
Good CSMs are measured on outcomes such as gross revenue retention (GRR), net revenue retention (NRR), logo churn, time to value and product adoption. The role needs empathy and communication, but also data skills, commercial thinking and the ability to say no politely while still protecting the relationship.
