About the role
A Business Development Manager (BDM) finds and opens new sources of revenue for a company. That can mean winning new customers, entering a new market or industry, or building partnerships with other companies that can resell, refer or co-sell. The BDM sits between marketing and sales: they research target accounts, start conversations, qualify real opportunities and move them toward a signed deal.
Day to day, a BDM researches accounts, runs outreach across email, phone, LinkedIn and events, holds discovery calls, builds proposals, and keeps the CRM accurate so the pipeline and forecast can be trusted. They work closely with marketing on campaigns, with pre-sales or product teams on solutions, and with finance and legal on pricing and contract terms.
Strong BDMs think in numbers as well as relationships. They know their conversion rates, pipeline coverage, deal size and sales cycle length, and they use that data to decide where to spend time. They also negotiate well: they trade value instead of giving discounts away, and they protect long-term margin and trust.
