Why is customer success important for a subscription business?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Revenue depends on renewals
- Keeping customers is cheaper than acquiring new ones
- Expansion from existing customers drives growth
- Happy customers give referrals and reviews
Model answer
In a subscription business, the first sale is only the start. Most of the revenue comes over time as customers renew month after month or year after year. If customers churn, the company has to keep spending on sales and marketing just to stand still, and acquiring a new customer usually costs much more than keeping one. Customer success protects that recurring revenue by making sure customers see value. It also creates growth through expansion, such as more users or higher plans, which raises customer lifetime value. Happy customers also become references, write reviews and refer others, which lowers acquisition cost. That is why many SaaS companies watch net revenue retention closely: it shows whether the existing base is growing or shrinking.
