hardPayroll Specialist interview question

Your Indian company is opening a new entity in the UAE with 30 employees. How would you set up payroll there?

What the interviewer wants to hear

  • Confirm entity type, labour registration and whether WPS applies
  • Define salary structures with basic and allowances, and contracts
  • Choose payroll tool or provider and WPS agent bank
  • Set up leave, gratuity accrual and final settlement rules
  • Build calendar, controls and reporting back to group finance

Model answer

I would start by confirming with legal and HR the entity type, mainland or free zone, its labour registration, and whether WPS applies, because that decides how salaries must be paid. Next I would agree salary structures: basic plus allowances such as housing and transport, keeping in mind that end-of-service gratuity is calculated on basic, so the basic share affects long-term cost. Contracts must match the payroll figures exactly. Then I would choose a payroll tool or provider that supports UAE payroll and WPS files, and open the relationship with an agent bank or exchange house. I would configure leave rules, gratuity accrual each month, overtime and final settlement logic. I would also set up a payroll calendar around UAE weekends and holidays, controls such as maker-checker, and monthly reporting in dirhams with a translation for group finance in India.
