How do you prepare for and run an intake meeting with a hiring manager?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Research the role, team and market beforehand
- Clarify the purpose and success measures of the role
- Agree must-haves versus nice-to-haves
- Agree process, interviewers, timeline and budget
- Set expectations with market data
Model answer
Before the meeting I review any existing job description, look at similar roles in the market and pull salary and talent availability data, for example from LinkedIn Talent Insights. In the meeting I ask why the role exists and what success looks like after six and twelve months, because that tells me more than a list of skills. Then we separate must-haves from nice-to-haves and agree what would rule someone out. We also agree the process: interview stages, who interviews for what, the scorecard, salary range and target dates. If expectations do not match the market, I share the data openly and suggest trade-offs. I end with a written summary sent the same day, so we both have the same picture.
