How do you keep candidates engaged during a long hiring process?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Explain the process and timeline at the start
- Give regular updates even without news
- Be reachable and responsive
- Prepare candidates for each stage
- Stay in touch after the offer until joining
Model answer
I explain the full process and expected timeline in the first call, so candidates know what is coming. After each stage I update them within an agreed time, even if the update is just that the panel has not decided yet. I prepare them for each interview by explaining who they will meet and what will be assessed, which reduces anxiety and helps them perform. I keep my messages personal and make myself easy to reach on phone or WhatsApp if that suits them. Between offer and joining, especially with long notice periods, I keep in touch with check-ins, introductions to the manager and team, and help with paperwork. Candidates rarely drop out because of a long process alone; they drop out because they feel forgotten.
