How would you build a Boolean search to find candidates for a role?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Start from the must-have skills in the intake
- List synonyms and alternative job titles
- Combine with AND, OR, NOT and brackets
- Use quotes for exact phrases
- Test, review results and refine
Model answer
I start from the intake meeting and list the true must-haves, for example a backend developer with Java and Spring and microservices experience. Then I brainstorm synonyms and alternative titles, because people describe the same job differently: developer, engineer, programmer, SDE. I group synonyms with OR inside brackets, join different requirements with AND, use quotes for exact phrases like "spring boot", and NOT to exclude things like intern or trainee. For example: (developer OR engineer OR SDE) AND java AND ("spring boot" OR spring) NOT intern. I run it in LinkedIn Recruiter or as a Google X-ray search with site:linkedin.com/in, review the first 20 profiles, and adjust if results are too broad or too narrow. I save good strings for future roles.
