mediumSales Executive interview question
How do you run a strong discovery call? What are you trying to learn?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Current situation and pain points
- Business impact and cost of the problem
- Decision makers and buying process
- Timeline and urgency
- Success criteria
Model answer
I set an agenda, then ask open questions about how they work today and what is not working. When I find a pain, I go deeper: how often does it happen, what does it cost in time or money, and who is affected. I want to learn the business impact, not just the symptom. I also ask how they usually buy solutions like this, who else is involved, what budget exists and what timeline they are working towards. Finally I ask what success would look like in six months. I summarise what I heard so they can correct me, and agree a next step.
Can you answer it under time pressure?
