How do you stay creative while working within strict brand guidelines?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Guidelines give consistency and recognition
- Creativity comes from concept, composition, imagery and copy
- Explore freedom within allowed elements
- Suggest guideline updates when there is a real gap
Model answer
I see brand guidelines as a frame rather than a cage. They protect consistency, which helps people recognise the brand. Inside them there is still a lot of freedom. The idea or concept behind a piece is where most creativity lives, for example a clever visual metaphor for a bank campaign. I can play with composition, cropping, scale and imagery, and work closely with copywriters on the headline. I also look at how the brand system can be pushed, such as using the brand colours in a bolder ratio, while still following the rules. If I find a real gap, like no guidance for a new short video format, I propose an addition to the brand team rather than breaking the rules on my own. Constraints often lead to sharper ideas.
