mediumContent Writer interview question
How do you adapt your writing to different brand voices or clients?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Study style guide and existing content
- Understand audience and personality
- Separate voice from tone by channel
- Ask for feedback early with a sample
Model answer
First I read the brand's style guide and their best-performing content to understand the voice, word choices and formatting. If there is no guide, I ask stakeholders to describe the brand in three words and share examples they like and dislike. I separate voice, which stays the same, from tone, which changes by situation; for example, a playful brand still needs a calm tone in a service outage email. I write a short sample, like an intro and one section, and get feedback before the full draft. I keep a personal checklist for each client with key terms, spellings and phrases to avoid, which helps me switch quickly between clients.
