mediumContent Writer interview question
How do you measure whether a piece of content is successful?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Define success by the goal set in the brief
- Different metrics for awareness, engagement, conversion
- Tools like GA4 and Search Console
- Compare against benchmarks over time
Model answer
Success depends on the goal agreed in the brief. For an awareness article, I look at impressions, clicks and rankings in Search Console, and organic sessions in GA4. For engagement, I check engaged sessions, scroll depth and time on page. For bottom-funnel content like a comparison page, conversions such as demo requests or sign-ups matter most. I compare results against similar pieces and check again after 30, 60 and 90 days, since search content takes time. If a piece underperforms, I look at the queries it shows for, the click-through rate and where people drop off, then update the title, intro or CTA.
