mediumContent Writer interview question
How do you work with an SEO specialist without making content sound robotic?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Agree on keyword and intent at brief stage
- Use primary keyword naturally in key places
- Cover related subtopics and questions
- Readability and helpfulness come first
Model answer
I involve the SEO specialist early, during the brief, so we agree on the main keyword, search intent and the questions the page should answer. Then I write for the reader first. I place the main keyword naturally in the title, first paragraph and one or two headings, and I cover related subtopics because that makes the piece more complete, not because I am chasing a density number. Internal links go where they genuinely help. If the SEO team asks for a change that hurts readability, I suggest an alternative, like moving a phrase to a heading instead of forcing it into a sentence. Good SEO and good writing usually point in the same direction.
