About the role
A UI/UX designer makes digital products easy and pleasant to use. UX (user experience) work covers understanding users, mapping their journeys, structuring information and testing ideas. UI (user interface) work covers the visual layer: layout, typography, colour, components and interaction states.
On a normal day you might run a user interview, sketch flows, build a clickable prototype in Figma, review a screen with developers, or study analytics to see where users drop off. You work closely with product managers, engineers, researchers and content writers, and you often have to explain your decisions with evidence rather than taste.
Good designers balance user needs, business goals and technical limits. They design for accessibility from the start, use and improve design systems, and measure whether a change actually helped users.

Learning roadmap
- 1
Learn design fundamentals
Study visual hierarchy, typography, colour, spacing, grids and Gestalt principles. Redesign a few screens from apps you use and explain each change.
- 2
Master a design tool
Get fluent in Figma: auto layout, components, variants, variables and prototyping. Build a small component library of your own.
- 3
Practise the UX process
Run interviews, create journey maps, sketch flows and wireframes, then test with 5 real users. Document what you learned and what you changed.
- 4
Design for accessibility
Learn WCAG 2.2 AA basics: contrast, focus states, keyboard use, labels and target sizes. Check your own work with a screen reader.
- 5
Work like a product team
Learn handoff, design tokens, basic HTML/CSS, analytics and A/B testing so you can collaborate with developers and measure results.
- 6
Build a case-study portfolio
Show 3-4 projects with the problem, your research, options you rejected, the final design and the measured outcome.
