How do you balance shipping fast with maintaining product quality and technical health?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Different decisions need different speed (reversible vs irreversible)
- Use MVPs, feature flags and staged rollouts
- Never compromise on security, privacy or data integrity
- Reserve capacity for tech debt and reliability
- Use metrics like incidents and delivery speed
Model answer
I think the answer depends on the type of decision. For changes that are easy to reverse, like a new onboarding screen, I prefer to ship quickly behind a feature flag, roll out to a small group and learn. For decisions that are hard to reverse, like data models, pricing or anything touching security and privacy, I slow down and get it right. I agree with engineering on a quality bar we never cross, such as no known security issues or data loss bugs. To protect long-term speed, we reserve a regular share of each sprint for technical debt and reliability, and I track incidents, bug rates and delivery speed. If quality metrics get worse, that is a signal to rebalance. Shipping fast only matters if we can keep shipping fast.
