A well-funded competitor launches a feature that your sales team says is costing deals. How do you respond?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Verify impact with data: win/loss, churn, pipeline
- Understand the customer need behind the feature
- Compare against your strategy and differentiation
- Options: match, leapfrog, reposition, or ignore
- Communicate a clear response to sales and leadership
Model answer
I avoid panic and copying, and start by measuring the real impact. I review win and loss data, talk to sales about specific lost deals, and interview a few prospects and customers who mentioned the feature. Often the feature matters a lot to one segment and little to others. Then I ask what customer need it meets, and how important that need is to our target customers and strategy. From there the options are clear. If it has become a basic expectation in our core segment, we may need parity, built quickly in a simple form. If we can solve the underlying problem better, we may leapfrog. If it serves customers we do not target, we may reposition and help sales qualify better. I share the decision and reasoning with leadership and give sales talking points.
