hardHR Recruiter interview question

A hiring manager tells you, "Only send me candidates under 30; older people will not fit this fast team." How do you handle it?

What the interviewer wants to hear

  • Refuse to apply a discriminatory filter
  • Explain the legal and ethical risk
  • Uncover the real need behind the request
  • Turn it into job-related criteria
  • Escalate and document if it continues

Model answer

I would not apply an age filter. I would talk to the manager privately and calmly explain that age-based selection is discrimination, unlawful in many countries, and exposes them and the company to claims. Then I would ask what they are really worried about: perhaps pace, comfort with new tools or willingness to work in a changing environment. Those are job-related qualities we can assess for any candidate with behavioural questions and work samples, so I would add them to the scorecard. This usually solves the real problem. If the manager insisted or I saw the bias continue in their decisions, I would document it and escalate to HR leadership. Protecting fair hiring is part of my job, and it also protects the manager from a serious mistake.
