Ten thousand brochures have been printed and delivered, and the client finds a wrong phone number that was in your final file. What do you do?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Take ownership quickly and calmly
- Check the facts: approvals, proofs, where the error came from
- Offer options: reprint, stickers, digital fix, costs and timing
- Agree a fair cost split based on responsibilities
- Improve process: proof checklists, sign-off, second checks
Model answer
First I respond quickly and calmly, without blaming anyone, and say I will help fix it. Then I check the facts: where the number came from, whether it was in the copy the client supplied and whether they signed off the proof, because this affects who should pay. Next I offer practical options with costs and timing, such as a full reprint, printed correction stickers, inserting a correction slip, or redirecting calls if the number belongs to the client. If the error was mine, I cover my part, for example a discount or the design time for the correction. If it came from approved client copy, I explain that gently while still helping. Afterwards I improve my process: a final proof checklist for contact details and prices, a clear written sign-off and a second person checking critical facts.
