hardGraphic Designer interview question

You strongly disagree with your art director about the direction of a campaign. What do you do?

What the interviewer wants to hear

  • Understand their reasoning first
  • Present your view with evidence linked to the brief
  • Offer to show an alternative, not just argue
  • Respect the final decision and commit to it

Model answer

I would start by understanding their reasoning, because the art director may know things I do not, like client history or brand plans. I would ask questions privately rather than argue in front of others. If I still believe my direction is better, I would explain why using the brief, the audience and any evidence, such as past campaign results or audience research. Instead of only talking, I would offer to quickly mock up my alternative so we can compare both side by side. Sometimes the best answer combines ideas. In the end the art director owns the decision. If they choose their direction, I commit to it fully and make it as strong as possible. Healthy disagreement improves work, but it should never hurt the team.
