About the role
A Financial Analyst helps a business decide where to spend money and checks whether those decisions are paying off. On a normal day you read the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement, update a budget or forecast, explain why actual results differ from plan, and build Excel models that answer questions such as: should we open this new store, can we afford this loan, or what is this company worth.
The work mixes accounting, maths and communication. You need to know how the three statements link, which ratios show liquidity, leverage and profitability, and how to use time value of money tools like NPV, IRR and DCF. Just as important is turning a large spreadsheet into a short message a CFO or board can act on, with clear assumptions and a view of what could go wrong.
In India and the Gulf, Financial Analysts work in corporate FP&A teams, banks and NBFCs doing credit analysis, investment and advisory firms, and fast-growing startups where unit economics, burn and runway are watched every month.

Learning roadmap
- 1
Accounting and the three statements
Learn how the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement are built and how they link through net income, retained earnings, working capital and cash. Practise with annual reports of listed Indian or UAE companies.
- 2
Ratios and working capital
Calculate liquidity, leverage, efficiency and profitability ratios, and the cash conversion cycle. Learn what each ratio says and the common traps, such as comparing companies in different industries.
- 3
Excel modelling skills
Get fast with XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS, data tables, goal seek and scenario switches. Build a clean three-statement model with inputs, calculations and outputs on separate sheets.
- 4
Budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis
Build an annual budget and a rolling forecast from business drivers. Practise price, volume and cost variance analysis and writing a one-page commentary for management.
- 5
Capital budgeting and valuation
Master NPV, IRR, payback, WACC and DCF valuation, then learn trading comparables and EV multiples. Always add sensitivity and scenario tables to show the range of outcomes.
- 6
Business metrics and storytelling
Learn unit economics, SaaS metrics such as ARR, churn, LTV and CAC, and basic credit analysis. Practise turning a model into a short board slide with a clear recommendation.
