About the role
An Accountant keeps the financial records of a business accurate, complete and on time. On a normal day you post journal entries, record sales and purchase invoices, match bank statements with the books, follow up on supplier and customer balances, and make sure taxes such as GST, TDS or UAE VAT are calculated and filed correctly. Most of this work happens in software like Tally, Zoho Books, SAP or Oracle, with a lot of Excel alongside it.
At month end and year end the job becomes closing the books: booking accruals and prepayments, depreciation, provisions and inventory adjustments, reconciling every important balance, and preparing the trial balance and financial statements. You need a firm grip on double entry and on the accounting standards that apply, such as Ind AS in India or IFRS in the UAE, because one wrong classification can change reported profit or a tax return.
As you grow, you own the full close for an entity, deal with statutory and tax auditors, prepare consolidated reports for a group, and help managers understand margins, cash flow and costs. Accuracy, clear documentation and meeting deadlines matter as much as technical knowledge.
