hardSales Executive interview question
The business team wants your product, but procurement is pushing hard for a 25% discount near quarter end. How do you handle the negotiation?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Understand procurement goals and constraints
- Use champion and economic buyer to confirm value
- Know your walk-away point and approval limits
- Trade concessions for value
- Avoid creating a quarter-end discount pattern
Model answer
First I would understand what procurement needs: a savings target, a budget cap or a benchmark. I prepare my limits in advance, including my walk-away point and what I can approve. I involve my champion and the economic buyer to confirm the business case and the cost of delay, so the conversation is not only about price. Then I trade: I might offer a smaller discount for a multi-year term, upfront payment, a case study or a fixed signing date. I avoid big quarter-end discounts with nothing in return, because buyers learn to wait for them. Every change is documented and approved internally.
