Leadership wants to change your product's pricing. How would you approach it?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Clarify the goal: revenue, margin, growth, positioning
- Understand value and willingness to pay by segment
- Choose value metric and packaging
- Test before full rollout and model impact
- Plan communication, existing customers and sales enablement
Model answer
I would first clarify the goal, because pricing for faster growth looks different from pricing for margin. Then I study value: interviews and surveys about willingness to pay, for example Van Westendorp questions, plus data on which features different segments use and how competitors price. From that I decide the value metric, such as seats, usage or contacts, and the packaging into tiers so each segment has a clear fit. I model the revenue impact with different adoption and churn assumptions. Where possible I test with new customers first, by region or with a share of traffic, before changing it for everyone. For existing customers I plan clear advance notice and possibly grandfathering. Sales and support need training and FAQs, and after launch I track conversion, upgrades, downgrades and churn closely.
