A new employee asks why their monthly take-home is much lower than their CTC divided by 12. How do you explain it?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- CTC includes employer costs such as employer PF and gratuity
- It may include annual or variable items like bonus not paid monthly
- Employee deductions such as PF, PT and TDS reduce gross to net
- Walk through the payslip with real numbers
Model answer
I explain that CTC is the total cost the company spends on them in a year, not their salary in hand. First, CTC includes costs that are not paid monthly, such as employer PF contribution, gratuity provision and sometimes insurance premiums. Second, it may include variable or annual items like a performance bonus that is paid only once a year. So monthly gross is lower than CTC divided by 12. Then, from the gross, we deduct the employee PF contribution, professional tax and income tax as TDS, which gives net pay. I would sit with them and walk through their own offer letter and payslip line by line, for example showing 12,00,000 CTC, around 96,000 monthly gross and then each deduction to the final take-home. Most people are fine once they see the numbers add up.
