hardDigital Marketing Specialist interview question

Ad platforms now automate targeting, bidding and even creatives with AI. Where do you still add value, and what risks do you manage?

What the interviewer wants to hear

  • Feeds good signals: conversion data, first-party data, value
  • Controls strategy, goals, budgets and guardrails
  • Supplies creative strategy and brand voice
  • Validates with incrementality and business data
  • Manages risks like brand safety, low-quality leads, opacity

Model answer

Automation is powerful but it optimises exactly what you feed it, so my value moves to inputs, strategy and checks. I make sure the algorithm gets the right signal, for example qualified leads or profit-based conversion values from the CRM instead of raw form fills, otherwise it finds cheap junk leads. I set the strategy: goals, budget split, target CPA or ROAS based on unit economics, and guardrails like brand exclusions, placement and negative keyword lists. Creative is now the biggest lever, so I lead the creative strategy, testing angles and keeping brand voice even when AI produces variations, and I review AI outputs for accuracy. Risks include opaque reporting, cannibalising branded search, brand safety issues and wrong claims in generated copy. I manage them with regular audits, lift tests and comparing platform claims to CRM revenue.
