A customer's procurement team demands a 25% price cut at renewal. How do you handle the negotiation?
What the interviewer wants to hear
- Prepare value evidence before the conversation
- Understand the driver behind the request
- Know your walk-away and approval limits
- Trade concessions for value (term, volume, case study)
- Keep the champion involved
- Avoid setting a bad precedent
Model answer
I would prepare before responding: measured ROI, usage trends, and the outcomes from our QBRs. I would also agree my limits internally with sales or finance. In the conversation, I would ask what is driving the request, such as a company-wide cost target, a competitor quote, or low usage on some seats. Each reason needs a different answer. If seats are unused, right-sizing may be fair. If it is a blanket target, I would trade rather than give, for example a smaller discount for a two-year term, prepayment, more seats or a case study. I would keep our champion involved, because procurement often lacks context on value. I would avoid a large unconditional cut, since it lowers the price for every future renewal.
