hardSEO Specialist interview question

How would you build a forecast to convince leadership to invest in an SEO project?

What the interviewer wants to hear

  • Start from keyword demand and current positions
  • Apply realistic CTR curves, adjusted for SERP features and AI Overviews
  • Convert traffic to conversions and revenue with real site data
  • Use scenarios and ranges, not one number
  • Include time to impact and costs
  • Track against the forecast after launch

Model answer

I start with the target keyword set, its monthly search volume and our current positions from Search Console and rank trackers. For each keyword, I estimate realistic target positions, then apply a CTR curve, ideally based on our own Search Console data, adjusted down where AI Overviews, ads or other SERP features take clicks. That gives estimated extra clicks. Then I convert clicks to conversions and revenue using our actual organic conversion rates and order values, or lead values from the CRM. I present conservative, expected and optimistic scenarios rather than one number, and I state the key assumptions clearly. I also show the timeline, because SEO often takes several months to show results, and compare the expected return with the cost of the work. After launch, I track actual results against the forecast and update it, which builds trust for future proposals.

Can you answer it under time pressure?
