set -e does not stop the script

This script runs with set -euo pipefail, yet when fetch_token fails the script keeps going and deploys with an empty token. Why?

A.local token=$(...) returns the status of local (0), hiding the failure; declare and assign separately.B.set -e is ignored inside all bash functions, so failures in get_token can never stop the script.C.pipefail switches off set -e inside command substitutions such as $(get_token) and $(fetch_token).D.The double quotes around "$TOKEN" make bash ignore the error from the earlier substitution.
