About the role
A DevOps Engineer builds and runs the systems that take code from a developer laptop to production safely and quickly. Day to day this means writing and fixing CI/CD pipelines, packaging services into container images, managing Kubernetes clusters, and describing cloud infrastructure as code with tools like Terraform or OpenTofu.
The role sits between development and operations. You help teams ship small changes often, with automated tests, security scans and rollbacks built in. When something breaks, you look at logs, metrics and traces, find the cause, and then automate the fix so it does not happen again.
Good DevOps engineers care about developer experience as much as uptime. They remove manual steps, keep secrets out of code, make environments repeatable, and write clear runbooks and documentation so the whole team can operate the platform.

Learning roadmap
- 1
Linux, networking and Git
Get comfortable with the Linux command line, file permissions, processes, systemd, SSH, DNS, HTTP and basic TCP/IP. Learn Git deeply: branches, merge vs rebase, revert, tags and pull requests.
- 2
Scripting and automation
Write Bash and Python scripts to automate everyday tasks. Learn to handle errors (set -euo pipefail), parse JSON with jq, and call REST APIs.
- 3
Containers and CI/CD
Build small, secure Docker images with multi-stage builds. Create pipelines in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI that build, test, scan and publish images, with caching and secrets handled correctly.
- 4
Kubernetes and GitOps
Learn Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, ConfigMaps, Secrets, probes and resource limits. Package apps with Helm or Kustomize and deploy them with Argo CD or Flux.
- 5
Infrastructure as Code and cloud
Use Terraform or OpenTofu to create networks, clusters and databases on one cloud. Learn remote state, locking, modules, plan review and drift detection.
- 6
Observability, security and reliability
Add metrics, logs and traces with Prometheus, Grafana and OpenTelemetry. Practise progressive delivery, image signing, SBOMs, least-privilege access and incident response.
Top DevOps Engineer interview questions
- What does DevOps mean to you, and how is it different from a traditional operations team?
- Walk me through the stages of a typical CI/CD pipeline you would build for a web service.
- How is a container different from a virtual machine? When would you choose one over the other?
- What is Infrastructure as Code and why is it better than creating resources by clicking in the cloud console?
- Explain how a Deployment, a Service and an Ingress work together to expose a web app in Kubernetes.
- Compare trunk-based development with GitFlow. Which would you choose for a team that deploys several times a day, and why?
