About the role
A Prompt Engineer designs the instructions, examples and context that make AI models do useful work reliably. You turn a business need, such as "summarise support tickets" or "draft product descriptions in our brand voice", into prompts and workflows that produce good results across thousands of real inputs, not just one demo.
Day to day you write and refine system prompts, choose examples, define output formats, and break complex tasks into steps. Just as important, you build evaluation sets and rubrics so you can measure whether a change actually improved quality. You work with product managers, domain experts and engineers, and you often review model outputs by hand to find failure patterns.
Good prompt engineers write clearly, think like testers, and understand how models behave: their strengths, their tendency to hallucinate, and risks like prompt injection. In 2026 the role often overlaps with AI product and evaluation work, so measuring quality, cost and safety matters as much as writing the prompt itself.

Learning roadmap
- 1
Understand how LLMs behave
Learn tokens, context windows, temperature, and why models hallucinate. Try the same task on several models to see how they differ.
- 2
Core prompting techniques
Practise clear instructions, roles, delimiters, few-shot examples, output formats and asking the model to reason step by step when useful.
- 3
Workflows and structured output
Break complex tasks into chained prompts, request JSON with schemas, and design prompts for retrieval and tool use.
- 4
Evaluation
Build test sets from real inputs, write grading rubrics, use LLM judges carefully and compare prompt versions with numbers, not feelings.
- 5
Safety, cost and production
Learn prompt injection risks and defences, manage prompt versions, and balance quality against cost and latency.
Top Prompt Engineer interview questions
- What makes a good prompt? Walk me through how you would write one for a new task.
- When would you use zero-shot prompting and when would you add few-shot examples?
- How can you use prompting to reduce hallucinations?
- Your product team needs model output that software can read reliably. How do you design the prompt?
- Describe your process for improving a prompt that is giving mixed results.
- Explain temperature and top-p. How would you set them for different tasks?
