Negative scores from cross_val_score

Why does this print negative numbers?

scores = cross_val_score(reg, X, y, cv=5, scoring='neg_mean_squared_error')
print(scores)  # e.g. [-412.3 -398.1 -455.0 -401.7 -420.9]
