About the role

A Frontend Developer builds the part of a website or web app that people see and use. On a normal day you turn designs into HTML, CSS and JavaScript, build reusable components in a framework like React, connect screens to APIs, and fix bugs that only show up on one browser or one phone size.

Good frontend work is more than making things look right. Pages must load fast on slow mobile networks, work with a keyboard and screen reader, handle loading and error states, and stay easy to change as the product grows. You work closely with designers, backend developers and testers, and you often decide how state, data fetching and routing are organised in the app.

As you grow, you own the architecture of a frontend codebase, set up build tools and testing, track Core Web Vitals, build design systems, and help the team choose between rendering strategies like client-side rendering, server rendering and static generation.

Learning roadmap

  1. 1

    HTML, CSS and the browser

Learn semantic HTML, forms, the box model, Flexbox, Grid and responsive design with media queries. Understand how the browser parses HTML, builds the DOM and paints the page.

  2. 2

    Modern JavaScript

Master scope, closures, this, promises, async/await, the event loop, modules and array methods. Practice DOM events and fetch without any framework first.

  3. 3

    TypeScript and a framework

Add TypeScript, then learn React deeply: components, props, state, hooks, effects, context and rendering. Build a few small apps that call real APIs.

  4. 4

    Tooling and testing

Use Git, npm or pnpm, Vite and ESLint. Write unit tests with Vitest or Jest and React Testing Library, and end-to-end tests with Playwright.

  5. 5

    Performance and accessibility

Learn Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), code splitting, image optimisation and caching. Follow WCAG basics: labels, focus order, contrast and ARIA only when needed.

  6. 6

    Rendering strategies and portfolio

Learn a meta-framework like Next.js and the trade-offs between CSR, SSR, SSG and streaming. Ship 3 to 4 polished, deployed projects that you can explain end to end.
